Community Alert - Theft of Vehicle Parts

Incident: Thefts of vehicle parts

Date: Between 9/14/19 – 9/30/19

Location: Parking garages and parking lots on campus

Details: In the last 2 weeks, SUDPS has received 15 reports of thefts of catalytic converters removed from cars that were parked in campus parking garages as well as street-level parking lots. The thieves have targeted a Toyota Prius in all but one incident; the exception was a Toyota Sequoia. SUDPS is investigating the reports, which include thefts during the day.

The Department of Public Safety encourages anyone who observes suspicious behavior or activity in a parking lot or garage to call 9-1-1. Please call to report any of the following:

-People loitering around vehicles, looking underneath or into parked vehicles

-Vehicles stopped behind or nearby parked vehicles in a way that could conceal criminal activity

-Vehicles up on a jack or hydraulic lift

-Activated car alarms

Safety and security tips: Remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings, especially when walking to and from your vehicle. Report any suspicious activity by calling 9-1-1 immediately so that police can respond and investigate.
