Bike Thefts and Attempted Bike Theft

Incident: Bike thefts and attempted bike theft

Dates and Time: 10/1 - 10/16

Location: Campus-wide, especially around EVGR

Additional details: Between October 4, 2020 and October 16, 2020, 15 bike thefts and one attempted bike theft were reported to the Stanford University Department of Public Safety (SUDPS). During the same time frame, SUDPS arrested 4 suspects for committing 4 separate bicycle thefts. For the remaining 12 reported crimes, there are no known witnesses and no suspect information. Several witnesses reported hearing the sound of grinding or cutting believed to be coming from a power tool in the areas where several of the reported thefts occurred. Prevention tips:
Be attentive to your surroundings and promptly report suspicious activities by calling 9-1-1. Provide as much detailed information as possible when reporting. Suspicious activity can include: utilizing hand tools to remove a bicycle, utilizing power tools to remove a bicycle, pushing/possessing multiple bicycles, carrying a locked bicycle, loitering for an extended amount of time near a bicycle parking area, taking an extended amount of time looking at multiple bicycles, trying to conceal oneself when observed, riding one bicycle to a bike rack and leaving on a different bicycle.
