Stanford Deputy Sheriffs
Stanford Deputy Sheriffs are deputized by the Sheriff of Santa Clara County and perform peace officer duties on the Stanford University Campus. Deputies wear uniforms, carry firearms and operate marked patrol vehicles.
Deputies enforce state and county ordinances to make arrests. They must be able to physically control violent persons and exercise good judgement and self-control in the discharge of their duties.
Deputies receive extensive training as required by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) and receive a basic Police Academy Diploma, upon graduation.
Deputies receive specialized training in dignitary protection and crowd control. The Department works closely with Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies. We frequently provide protective security for dignitary visits and high level visitors who do not have government support staff.
Public Safety Officers and Community Service Officers
Public Safety Officers and Community Service Officers are non-sworn and are unarmed. PSOs and CSOs wear a uniform and a duty belt with limited gear.
PSOs and CSOs support the overall public safety mission of the Stanford Department of Public Safety by performing a variety of functions. Specific duties include:
- patrolling designated areas of the University for suspicious and/or illegal behavior, safety hazards, unlocked doors, and opportunities to assist the public, etc.
- providing directions and assistance to community members and visitors
- Enforcing violations of the University's Parking Code
- Providing traffic control services during emergencies and special events
- Providing security and logistical support for special events and emergencies
- Providing first aid or CPR; and
- Stand a security post in a potentially dangerous location.
Special Event Patrol Officers
Special Events Patrol officers (SEPs) are non-sworn, unarmed security personnel who work part-time at Stanford University. SEPs wear a uniform and a duty belt with limited gear.
Administrative and Support Staff
Stanford Public Safety administrative and support staff consists of a wide variety of staff members and roles including front office support, logistics, training and compliance, recruitment, and IT.
